Printing on paper was invented in China about 700 A.D., making China the country with the longest history of printing in the world. The Chinese engraved wood blocks to produce raised designs; the block was then covered with ink and pressed by hand onto paper to print the image multiple times.
Join us at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and make your own block print. The program includes a 45-minute spring stroll and tour of the Chinese garden followed by a workshop to design and carve your own rubber block and print it on paper. A small assortment of Chinese type from the Ho Sun Hing Print Shop, Canada’s oldest Chinese print shop, will also be onsite. All materials provided. The workshop is suitable for ages 10 and up. Please note that a signed waiver is required.
The printmaking workshop will be facilitated by artists from WePress. WePress is a community artspace in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver on the occupied territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), and mi ce:p kwətxwiləm (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
